The Ranas, a cheerfully chaotic family, live in the heart of metropolitan Lahore. While everyone eagerly awaits the birth of the eldest son and his wife’s child, the unemployed younger son Haider and his wife Mumtaz’s marriage defies society’s conventions. Independent Mumtaz is the breadwinner, while dreamer Haider spends his days with his nephews. When Haider discovers the world of erotic theatre and secretly takes a job as a backup dancer for trans starlet Biba, his move will affect the whole family. Joyland is the first Pakistani film shown at Cannes, where it won the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard section and the Queer Palm.
