Film director Gabriel arrives to a social housing French suburb to cast child actors for his new project. His film centres on a pregnant teenager and her younger brother, and Gabriel wants authentic local residents to play them. The film crew’s arrival prompts jealousy and division among younger residents, while the older ones complain that a film of this sort only perpetuates stereotypes and turns away affluent people. Why can’t the story be about the success of their gymnastics team? When Gabriel announces his choice of actors, everyone in the neighbourhood is taken aback and wondering why he chose the worst of the lot. Winner of Un Certain Regard Prize in Cannes.
