It is July 2014 and war is breaking out in Donbas. Expectant parents Irka and Tolik live near the Ukrainian-Russian border. The nervous anticipation of their child’s birth is rudely interrupted by the crash of a Malaysian airplane and the bombing of their house. While the villagers flee before the advancing Russian army, Irka refuses to leave her home and stubbornly devotes herself to daily chores and repairs on their home. Meanwhile, the ideologically undecided Tolik tries to please both sides in order to protect his family. This powerful and relevant drama is Ukraine’s Oscar entry, also awarded for Best Directing at Sundance.
