When an asteroid hits Earth, leading to underwater volcanic eruptions, the inhabitants of a small riverside town start to flee inland. Before she leaves, Nian decides to say goodbye to her childhood friend. Along the way, she crosses paths with some of the town’s residents, while her memories of the town gradually become clearer. Awarded the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film at this year’s Cannes, this speculative drama offers a peek inside the apocalypse in equal parts mesmerizing and terrifying.

Director and screenwriter born in China in 1995. She graduated in film and television from the Tisch School of the Arts in New York. In her work, she deals with the depiction of emotional struggles of real life, her stories focusing on social minorities, such as Asian women, the LGBTQ community and children. She currently lives and works between New York and Beijing.
